West Walk, Hundred Acres, nr Wickham, Hampshire.

I’m suffering from a head cold at the moment which has infected my voice and therefore I had to cancel a couple of appointments for this afternoon/evening. Becky had to get he kids a ‘MacDonald’s’ (gross!!) and she fancied a burger herself, so we stopped off on Portsdown Hill for a decent burger, at Micks Monster Burger van!
While watching Carrion Crows, Rooks, Jackdaws and Black-headed Gulls hoping for scraps people leave near the van, and with Swifts flying past in fairly good numbers, I asked Becky if we could go and see the Nightjars again for a good month tick.
We arrived at West Walk around 8.45pm though it was a little overcast. I know the birds show despite the cloud cover but it would be darker sooner than normal. After playing some ‘thicket cricket’, we waited patiently for things to show. A Green Woodpecker flew over and into the woodland (month tick), which was a good start, and by 9.30pm, our first Woodcock flew over. I didn’t even take my binoculars as they were in my car and not Becky’s. But really, we didn’t need them. The Woodcock put on a good show, ‘roding’ over the woodland all the time we were there. It wasn’t long either when our first Nightjar showed. It was a female bird (lacking the white wing patched of the male) and she called several times as she flapped around our heads. No sign of the male though which was surprising and the familiar ‘churring’ call was not heard during our stay. There was another elderly couple present hoping to see the birds too and they were not disappointed.
So, the evening ended with three more month ticks, which I was very pleased about. The White tailed Plover is still on Caerlavorock WWT but how long it will stay for who knows?
