Farlington Marshes and Langstone Harbour, Hampshire.
I managed to prise Becky away from the telly this evening as we both took ‘Scruff’ our dog for a walk over Farlington Marshes. It was a lovely evening, with hardly a cloud in the sky though a little chilly on the way back to the car. There have been some interesting waders on the Marshes of late including some Avocets and Spotshanks yesterday, so hopefully, something good might have turned up.
Though the tide was out within the harbour, the water level on the Lake was very low too, which provided excellent feeding conditions for any passing wader. I was in luck as I found my first Spotshank of the year, a juvenile, feeding with a Greenshank at the back of the Lake. Amongst the 20+ Dunlin present, I found up to two Curlew Sandpipers of which one bird was still sporting a lot of red on the breast. Up to three Ruffs were seen and along the edge of the reeds, at least a dozen Common Snipe were counted. Three Common Sandpipers were seen as well as a single Green Sandpiper feeding along the back of the Lake too.
Wildfowl numbers are now on the increase and amongst the many Mallard, Eurasian Teal and Shoveler, I found my first Pintail of the month. Three Grey Herons decided to play chase and put up all the waders but as the light was failing, we decided to head home.
